I had a problem with my Windows Defender giving me the following error code: 0X80240022 when it tried to update. I was also unable to download updates for XP, and office through the browser.

To solve it I went to start> programs > administrative tools > services.

Then restarted both automatic updates and background intelligent transfer service. (right click them and choose restart).

Solved my problem. THANKS
Most other sites try to sell a registry cleaner.
I had to follow a different path to get, to services
start > control panel > administrative tools > services
Then do restarts.

It worked for me too. Even after countless hours dealing with Microsoft tech support and being scammed by all the "regfix" software programs. Much appreciated!!

I've just had the same issue with Microsoft Forefront Client Security(FCS) , It includes defender. It would update via Windows Update but I got the 0×80240022 error from within the FCS console and an MPSampleSubmission Event ID 5000 in the Application Log in Event Viewer:
Event Type mptelemetry, P1 80240022, P2 processdownloadresults, P3 download, P4 1.5.1972.0, P5 mpsigdwn.dll, P6 1.5.1.1972.0 P7 microsoft forefront client security, P8 NIL, p9 Nil, P10 NIL.

Having tried all suggestions without success I Installed .NET framework 1.1 and now all is fine.

Worked for me too. Under Vista64 the service 'automatic updates' is named 'windows update' though!

21 jjc 07.19.10 at 11:31 am

windows update refuses to install even with the firewall down.
this really blows.

sorry man, i did exactly what you said but im still getting the same problems, i see it worked for everyone else so would it be possible that there is a special case of sorts?

24 jack 08.09.10 at 5:06 pm

sorry for my previous post but i found that you also require to have at least 50 MB or so of memory left on your computer for 0×80240022 to be fixed

25 Ben 08.21.10 at 9:08 pm

Worked like a charm!
Only thing to add is that this fix may not work until you also restart your computer after restarting both of the services.
Thanks for posting this easy solution!
